raumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by outside forces. It may or may not result from a direct blow to the head and in many cases there is no visible head wound. Even a so-called "mild" TBI can have serious long-term repercussions. TBI is difficult for victims and their families because the symptoms can be confusing and intermittent. TBI lawsuits are very challenging and require extensive knowledge of the medical and emotional aspects of brain injury. Stipe Injury Law’s TBI team has the knowledge and experience to bring all the facts together and help you through your case.
Causes of traumatic brain injury
A TBI lawsuit will always be a part of a larger case that revolves around the cause of injury. Common causes of TBI include:
Auto accidents
Falls
Violence
Sports
Falls are a common cause of TBI and can be the result of many situations including nursing home abuse and slip and fall. Violence leading to TBI can be the result of negligent security, nursing home abuse, and many other situations with a root cause in negligence.
In an auto accident, TBI can be the result of a direct blow to the head but more often is the result of whiplash.
Mild brain injury is a misleading term
Severity of brain injury is rated on the Glasgow Coma Scale which measures the immediate effects rather than long-term damage to the brain. Damage to the brain can continue to progress for 72 hours after injury, often getting far worse after consciousness is regained. The long-term effects can be difficult or impossible to gauge, and a “mild” brain injury can cause permanent disability.
TBI is often overlooked
When TBI occurs with no direct blow to the head and no visible injury, it is often overlooked for months or even years. Symptoms are elusive and often come and go. Many victims do not realize that their symptoms are related to their accident. Long-term effects of TBI can include:
Personality changes
Behavioral changes
Unexplained anger
Depression
Apathy
Blackouts
Seizures
Memory loss
Difficulty concentrating
Slowed mental processing
Difficulty with abstract thinking
Fatigue
Sleep disorders
Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Sensitivity to light
Sensitivity to noise
Vision problems
Ringing in the ears
Reduced motor skills
