pinal cord injuries are often very serious, life-changing injuries that can devastate the injured and his/her family. An injury to the spine can result in full or partial paralysis of the limbs and torso. We have represented many clients who suffered a spinal cord injury through no fault of their own and we can help you, too. We have spinal cord injuries that resulted from:

Spinal Cord Function

The human spinal cord is made up of a bundle of nerves that travels from the brain all the way down to the lower back. The spinal column, also known as the backbone, is made up of four regions:

  • Sacral area (tailbone)
  • Lumbar area (lower back)
  • Thoracic area (mid spine)
  • Cervical area (neck)

The role of the spinal cord is to carry messages from the brain to various parts of the body, and different areas of the spinal cord are responsible for different bodily functions. The spinal cord is protected by numerous vertebrae, and when these vertebrae are injured, they cannot protect the spinal column and spinal cord injury is the result.

Spinal Injuries and Disabilities

The type of disability you suffer will depend on where your spinal cord was injured. Spinal cord injuries range from mild to severe, depending on the location and damage. Generally speaking, the higher the damage occurs on the spinal cord, the more severe the resulting injury will be. For example, if you suffer an injury to the lower part of your back, the result could be numbness or loss of bladder/bowel control. If the spinal cord is injured in the thoracic or cervical area, then paralysis will most likely result.

Quadriplegia results in a loss of feeling or movement of the head, shoulders, neck, arms and upper chest region while paraplegia results in loss of movement from the chest down in the stomach, legs, and feet.

While there have been advances in the treatment of spinal cord injuries, there is still no "cure." The main objective is to prevent any further damage once a spinal cord injury has happened.
