Ford Motor Company is recalling about 680,000 vehicles globally due to faulty seat belts. Safety belts are supposed to keep you safe in a crash by restraining you when your car collides with something or something crashes into your vehicle. But, when the safety belts are defective, it can put the driver and passengers in danger.

The recall affects certain versions of the 2013-2016 model-years Ford Fusion, the 2015-2016 Ford Mondeo, and the 2013-2015 Lincoln MKZ so that the defect can be repaired. A media release from Ford says that they are recalling the products to repair the front driver and passenger seat belt anchor pre-tensioners to prevent cable separation in a crash. The release says that in affected vehicles, the increased temperatures generated during deployment of the seat belt anchor pre-tensioner could cause the pre-tensioner cables to separate, which would not adequately restrain a vehicle occupant in a crash, risking injury.

Ford reports that there have been at least two accident and two injuries that have occurred because of the defective seat belt cables.

The repair of the seat belt anchor pre-tensioner can be done in the dealership at no cost to the customer. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified through the mail.

As consumers, we use so many products each day as we move through our lives at home and at work. When those products become defective, they can cause injury and harm and even death. When it comes to the safety of our vehicles and their parts, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed a website that keeps track of safety recalls and informs consumers about them. Safercar.gov allows you to enter your vehicle’s VIN number and find out if it is subject to any recalls, or if it has had recalled parts repaired as far as 15 years in the past. Consumers can also enter their email address to get updated recall information in their Inbox.

Complying with recall notices and keeping your vehicle properly maintained is part of your duty to ensuring that your vehicle is safe on the road.
