Zoloft® is an antidepressant that belongs to a drug group known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs are used to treat depression more than any other drug in the United States. Unfortunately, scientific studies have recently linked SSRI drugs like Zoloft to several life-threatening birth defects.

Zoloft® and Congenital Birth Defects

It is a violation of medical ethics to perform studies on pregnant women, but studies have been conducted with Zoloft on pregnant animals, showing that the drug has an adverse effect on the developing fetus. Because of this research, the FDA currently lists Zoloft on its “Category C” class of medications, indicating that it is capable of interfering with a child’s development.

Zoloft’s manufacturer has issued no warnings about congenital birth defects, despite the fact that Zoloft and other SSRIs have been linked to conditions such as:

  • - Heart defects
  • - Limb defects
  • - Brain and spinal cord defects
  • - Clubfoot
  • - Partial or complete closure of the anus
  • - Cleft lip and cleft palate
  • - Skull defects
  • - PPHN (Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn).

Many families who were not warned about the risks of taking Zoloft have experienced untold financial and emotional distress because their child was born with a birth defect that could have been avoided.

A Responsibility to Warn Patients

Drug manufacturers are obligated to warn doctors and patients of any known risks related to taking their medications during pregnancy. When pharmaceutical manufacturers fail to warn consumers of defective drugs, they can and should be held accountable.

Filing a lawsuit cannot reverse what has happened, but it can help you pay for your child’s medical needs both now and into the future. Additionally, it will give you a platform and a voice to stand up against massive drug companies that put their own company profits over the safety of American families.

If you took Zoloft during pregnancy and your child was born with a birth defect, please contact our experienced drug injury lawyers at the Stipe Law Legal Group today to schedule a free case evaluation.
