f you or someone you love is unable to work due to a physical or psychological disability, you may qualify for something called Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), especially if the disability is expected to last at least for one year or will result in death.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers four different benefit programs for people with disabilities:

  • SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Disabled Widows and Widowers Benefits (DWB)
  • Disabled Adult Child Benefits (DAC)

The medical requirements to prove disability, as well as for making disability determinations, is basically the same for all four types of benefit programs.

Many people confuse SSDI and SSI, but there are differences.

SSDI pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are “insured,” which means you have worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes). A person eligible for SSDI will automatically be enrolled in Medicare after receiving two years of benefits.

SSI pays benefits based on financial need, whether or not you have worked. SSI is a federal income supplement program that is funded by general tax dollars (not Social Security taxes). People who qualify for SSI automatically qualify for Medicare with no waiting period as in SSDI.

Why do I need an SSDI attorney?

Our highly trained and experienced SSDI attorneys can help you understand this very complex system of paying benefits. Many people who apply for these benefits without the assistance of an attorney are promptly denied benefits. There is complicated paperwork involved in applying for SSDI, and we have helped hundreds of clients receive the SSDI payments to which they are entitled.

If you have applied and were denied a claim, the next step will be a hearing. A qualified SSDI attorney can help you with your claim and get you back pay and continued benefits. Initial claims are denied up to 70% of the time; we can make sure you are in the 30% that are accepted.

If you feel you qualify for SSDI benefits and live in Oklahoma, our experienced SSDI attorneys can help you through this difficult time. Please contact our office to schedule a confidential consultation today.
