axil is one of a popular class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and although it was only approved for a small number of applications, it became widely prescribed including depression for women during pregnancy.  In addition to the suicidal ideations that have been publicized, in July 2006 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that children whose mothers took Paxil during pregnancy were at an increased risk for health defects including:

  • Heart Deformities
  • PPHN (Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn)
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Seizures or tremors
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood sugar
  • "Cholic" or irritability in newborns

The link between Paxil and birth defects first became known in 2005 when a study run by the drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, revealed that women who took Paxil were twice as likely to give birth to a child with defects as mothers who took other antidepressants.  Three subsequent studies have confirmed the results, with the most recent published in December 2008, showing that mothers who took Paxil during the first trimester were four times as likely to give birth to a child with defects as mothers not taking any antidepressants.

Doctors Continue Prescribing Paxil

Although you would think that doctors would simply stop prescribing Paxil to pregnant women, the truth is that many doctors view this as a grey area.  They believe prescribing Paxil to be a beneficial risk because many of the birth defects "can be treated."  However, you, the mother and father of newborn with congenital heart defects, know that the risk was not beneficial.  Nor was it the doctor's place to put your child at risk.

If your child has been born with a birth defect as a result of a Paxil prescription, you deserve compensation, not just for the injury, and for the cost to correct it, but also for the pain and for the ongoing injury.  Although many of these conditions can be treated, they may never be whole, and you and your child must live with it for the rest of his or her days.

To get compensation, you need a defective drug lawyer who is prepared to find all those responsible and make them face up to the hurt they caused you.  The attorneys at Stipe, Harper, Laizure, Uselton, Belote, Maxcey, & Thetford will hold the doctor, the hospital, the manufacturer, and all others responsible for your injury.  Schedule a defective drug consultation today.
