The symptoms and consequences of a catastrophic injury are not always evident immediately. Certainly some are, but in the case of a head injury for instance, the impairments to the brain may not become apparent for several weeks or months. A person might at first dismiss the incident as a minor injury, but later experience problems like memory loss, difficulty with speaking, and balance and coordination troubles.
