The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently reported that Actos may increase a person’s risk of bladder cancer if the drug is used for a year or longer. This news comes on top of the defective drug’s established risks of heart disease. The FDA announced their warning merely days after Actos was removed from French and German markets over similar concerns.

The FDA’s Ongoing Actos Study

Actos is designed to control glucose (blood sugar) and increase insulin sensitivity in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Since September of last year, the FDA has been consistently monitoring the link between Actos and bladder cancer in patients with diabetes. Their study has involved over 193,000 patients.
Unfortunately, the current results show that patients who take Actos for longer than a year are 40% more likely to develop bladder cancer. A similar study from France has also shown that this percentage goes up the longer patients stay on the drug past the one year mark.

Is Actos Worth the Risk?

Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Actos, continues to cite Actos’ proven ability to help control Type 2 diabetes in patients. However, the FDA is urging patients and doctors alike to weigh the risks of Actos against its benefits.

Indeed, many doctors believe the benefits of controlling diabetes are not worth the risk of bladder cancer, heart problems, and other health issues. Patients who already have bladder cancer – or who have had it in the past – are strongly advised not to use the drug.

If you have been using Actos and you have developed any of the following symptoms of bladder cancer, contact your primary doctor immediately:

  • - Pain when urinating
  • - Urgent/frequent need to urinate
  • - Blood in your urine
  • - Lower back or abdominal pain

If you have developed bladder cancer because of Actos use, you may be entitled to compensation. Please contact our experienced drug injury lawyers at the Stipe Law Legal Group today to review your case and discuss your legal options.
